Erlkönig

25.11.08 | No Comments

Not that many filmed performances make it on to The Resonance but this is an exception. Here, the lieder legend Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (at not quite 35 years old) takes on Erlkönig, Schubert’s iconic Goethe setting. Without a change in camera angle, he manages to tell the whole story as if reading to a child. He is accompanied by pianist Gerald Moore.

A subtitled version can be found here. Their sound recording of this and other Schubert songs is available on CD from Amazon.

Then a parody of the song - equally brilliant in its way - by a different Moore, Dudley Moore, with an introduction by Jonathan Miller.

Beyond the Fringe is available on DVD (NTSC) from Amazon.
